Highlands County encompasses 1,029 square miles of the state’s heartland and 78 square miles of water in the center of Florida’s peninsula. Highlands is an appropriate name due to the rolling hills of the Lake Wales Ridge in the heart of Central Florida. This unique geological feature begins at the southern tip of the County and runs through its center, ending in Lake County about 150 miles to the north.
